Data-driven in professional football
How a Bundesliga club can set new sporting and economic standards
With prodot from match analysis to member understanding
Goal
Development of a company and club-wide data strategy to optimize sporting performance, data-based scouting and a better understanding of club members.
Solution
Together with the Bundesliga club, prodot is developing a data strategy. The focus is on building a scalable data architecture for match and business data that enables networked analysis of training, matches and club operations. The basis is prodot'smodular data-driven approach, adapted to the club's respective level of maturity with regard to its data strategy.
From the pitch to the office
Modular approach for the sporting, club-internal & corporate sector
1. Data Visioneering
Define goals: On the sporting side, training should be individualized, the style of play optimized based on data and scouting objectified. Live coaching during the match and opponent analysis should also be based on real-time data.
In the office, the aim is to better understand members and specifically evaluate purchasing behavior in the fan store.
2. Data Discovery
Inventory: Differently structured data sources (e.g.tracking data, training reports, sales data) are available unconnected in data silos. There is a lack of both a standardized data pipeline and clear governance structures to enable better and faster decisions to be made from linked data.
3. Data Strategy
Strategic realignment: prodot develops a central data strategy and uses Microsoft Fabric as the basis for this. The sports data is structured in a so-called "medallion architecture" and data providers are connected. Uniform data governance for sport and administration is established.
4. Data Strategy Implementation
A scalable architecture is set up in Microsoft Fabric that integrates training, match and office data. A connection to BI tools such as Tableau is added for analysis. The implementation is carried out in agile stages by an interdisciplinary team from prodot.
5. Data Value Creation
The results make the difference - on the pitch and in the office:
- Training sessions can now be optimized based on individual performance data.
- Scouting decisions are more objective and data-based.
- During the game, live data is used to react more quickly tactically.
- Opponent analyses provide concrete clues for match preparation.
- On the business side, the club understands the behavior of its members better and can design store offers in a more targeted manner.
Conclusion
From raw data chaos to game decisions in real time
The case shows: Data strategy is not a future issue in sport either, but a clear competitive advantage - if it is implemented correctly. With prodot as a partner, isolated data islands become a networked overall system that has a sporting and economic impact.
