AI GLOSSARY

GPT / GPT Family

GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) is OpenAI’s family of large language models—from the original GPT-3 through GPT-4 to the o-series. It has been driving the boom in generative AI since 2022 and is one of the most important model families for businesses. Available for enterprise use via Azure OpenAI.

What is GPT?

GPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer —the model family from OpenAI that has been shaping the advancement of large language models since 2018. The core idea: A Transformer network is pretrained on massive amounts of text and then fine-tuned for specific tasks.

Key generations: GPT-3 (2020, breakthrough), GPT-3.5 (2022, basis for ChatGPT), GPT-4 (2023, significantly better at reasoning), GPT-4o (2024, multimodal, fast), o-series (2024/25, specialized reasoning models).

OpenAI offers the models via its own API, ChatGPT (Consumer and Enterprise), and via Azure OpenAI (Microsoft). For enterprise use, the Azure route is usually the better choice—due to EU data residency and compliance options.

For small and medium-sized businesses, GPT models are one of the standard building blocks for generative AI in the enterprise—from customer service to software development.

An Overview of GPT Models

The GPT family is extensive—there are models suited for a variety of applications. These eight are particularly important:

GPT-4o

Multimodal, fast, and well-rounded. The go-to all-around solution for many enterprise use cases.

GPT-4o mini

Smaller, significantly more affordable. For high-volume standard tasks.

o Series (o3, o4)

Reasoning models for complex, multi-step tasks. Internal chain-of-thought.

GPT-4 Turbo

Predecessors of GPT-4o — still in use for some tasks.

GPT Image

Designed specifically for image generation and editing.

Whisper

Speech-to-Text — OpenAI's audio model.

Embeddings

Text embedding models for RAG and semantic search.

Fine-Tuned GPT

Customized to your own data — for specific domains and brands.

Best Practices for GPT in the Workplace

These six principles have proven effective:

  • About Azure OpenAI: EU region, AV agreement, enterprise features—the standard for small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Choose the right model: It doesn’t always have to be GPT-4o—GPT-4o mini is sufficient for simple tasks.
  • Take prompt engineering seriously: A good prompt beats a larger model.
  • RAG instead of fine-tuning: Usually the more pragmatic choice for corporate knowledge.
  • Cost management: Monitor token consumption per use case — use provisioned throughput for stable volumes.
  • Test model updates: New versions can change behavior—create golden sets before switching.

Common GPT Mistakes in the Workplace

We see these pitfalls time and time again:

  • ChatGPT-Free for Businesses: Consumer Version Without an AV Contract — GDPR Violation and Data Risk.
  • Model too large: A reasoning model for simple classification—expensive and slow.
  • No Cost Control: Unlimited prompts cause the bill to skyrocket.
  • API key in the frontend: a security disaster — always make calls via the backend.
  • Model change without testing: New version behaves differently — regressions go undetected.

GPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini

A comparison of three leading model families:

  • GPT (OpenAI): Market leader, broad ecosystem, excellent reasoning branch (o-series).
  • Claude (Anthropic): Strong at complex tasks and long contexts — popular with developers.
  • Gemini (Google): Multimodal and deeply integrated into the Google ecosystem.
