Digitalization in sports

From apps to club administration: tailor-made digital solutions for sports organizations and clubs.

Digitalization in sport by prodot

What does digitalization mean in sports?

Sport has long been a digital business. Fans expect real-time experiences on their smartphones, clubs evaluate their athletes' performance data down to the minute, and clubs manage ticketing, merchandising and sponsor relationships via networked platforms. If you want to keep up in this world, you need more than just a good-looking website.

In concrete terms, digitalization in sports means digital touchpoints that inspire fans instead of frustrating them. Content systems that allow editorial teams to work efficiently. Data platforms that translate performance data from training and competitions into actionable insights. And portals that provide sponsors, partners and members with the right information.

prodot has been developing tailor-made software solutions for companies and organizations for over 25 years. For sports organizations, this means: fan apps, content backends, data platforms and member portals, developed and operated on the basis of modern cloud technologies such as Microsoft Azure.

The status quo: high expectations, slow implementation

The figures speak for themselves. According to the SPORTHEADS Digital Digest 2024, less than 50% of the sports organizations surveyed rate their own level of digitalization as good or very good. At the same time, expectations are rising on all sides: 69% of fans use digital technologies or apps to follow and enrich sporting events. 61% of German soccer fans regularly study statistics, according to a Forsa survey from 2024.

The pattern is familiar: Pressure grows, implementation lags behind. This is exactly where prodot comes in.

The biggest digitalization challenges in sport

Sports organizations face a specific digitalization problem: the requirements for real-time capability, scalability and user experience are high, but technical resources are often limited internally. At the same time, the pressure of expectations is growing from three sides simultaneously: fans, sponsors and associations.

The typical challenges:

Scattered content without a standardized platform. Match statistics, social media content, video highlights and editorial articles are created in different systems and do not automatically end up where fans expect them: in the app, on the website, in the livestream feed.

Lack of scalability at peak times. When a transfer rumor goes viral or the final game starts, websites and apps collapse. Systems that are not designed for traffic peaks cost reach and trust.

Outdated club administration. Many clubs still use spreadsheets and emails for membership administration, contribution communication and event management. This ties up resources that are urgently needed in sports operations.

Unused performance data. Sensors, tracking solutions and statistics systems provide enormous amounts of data. Without the right infrastructure, this data remains unused or ends up in isolated Excel files.

Sponsors without proof. Digital sponsorship formats only work if reach, interaction and visibility can be measured. Those who cannot deliver this will lose budgets to platforms that can.

Digital levers for sports organizations

Digitalization in sport delivers the greatest benefits where it has a direct impact on the experience of fans and the efficiency of teams. The most important fields of application:

Fan apps and digital experience platforms. A modern fan app is more than just a match schedule with push notifications. It aggregates live stats, social media content, exclusive background reports and interactive formats into an experience that keeps fans coming back every day.

Content backend and CMS. Editorial teams need tools that allow them to publish quickly and across channels. A modern content management system combines website, app and social media output in a single interface and significantly reduces manual effort.

Data analysis and performance tracking. Whether heart rate, GPS running data or pass rates: Sports organizations that systematically evaluate training data make better decisions in player commitment, training management and injury prevention. Dashboards and reporting platforms turn raw data into decision-relevant information.

Member and partner portals. Clubs with a large member base need scalable self-service solutions for contribution management, communication and event booking. Sponsor and partner portals create transparency about campaign performance and reach.

E-commerce and ticketing. Merchandising and ticket sales are key sources of revenue in sport. Integrated platforms link store, ticketing and CRM in such a way that purchase history, seat preferences and fan communication are managed from a single system.

Cloud infrastructure and scalability. Sporting events generate extreme traffic peaks. A cloud-based infrastructure based on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes ensures that apps and websites remain stable even when accessed by hundreds of thousands of people at the same time.

Reference: Modern content backend for Bayer 04 Leverkusen

The project that prodot implemented for Bayer 04 Leverkusen shows what digitalization in sports looks like in concrete terms.

The challenge: the Bundesliga club wanted to fundamentally modernize the digital fan experience. Content from various sources - editorial articles, video contributions, live statistics, social media channels - was to be seamlessly merged on the website and app. At the same time, the previous Azure-based Umbraco cloud infrastructure was to be migrated to the association's own Azure cloud.

The solution: prodot developed a powerful content aggregation backend with an integrated CMS that brings all of Bayer 04's editorial work onto a central platform. Content can be created intuitively and dynamically displayed on the website and app. Third-party systems are connected via REST APIs - for live statistics, push notifications, social media aggregation and digital asset management. The system is technologically based on .NET 8 and Kubernetes and runs entirely in the club's own Azure cloud.

The results at a glance:

  • Seamless fan experience on all digital channels thanks to centralized content control from a single platform.

  • More efficient editorial work thanks to a CMS that enables cross-channel publishing in a single step.

  • Stable infrastructure during traffic peaks thanks to cloud-native architecture on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes.

  • Complete data control thanks to migration to the association's own cloud.

  • Excellent result: Silver at the German Digital Award 2024 in the "Design/User Experience" category, 6 Platinum Awards at the Vega Digital Awards (including User Experience, Best Content, Best Data Visualization) plus Gold in the Sports category and Silver at the BCM Award (Best of Content Marketing).

Why prodot is the right partner for digitalization in sports

Digitalization projects in sport rarely fail because of the idea. They fail when systems collapse under load, when content teams do not master the tools or when no one operates solutions after the go-live.

We know the demands of sports operations. Fan communication does not run according to office hours. Transfer windows, match days and cup runs create extreme situations that systems have to be able to handle. We develop solutions that are designed precisely for this reality.

We build on Microsoft Azure. As a long-standing Microsoft partner, we develop and operate solutions on Azure based on Kubernetes. This means automatic scaling, high availability and an infrastructure that grows with your requirements.

We integrate what is already there. No association starts from scratch. Existing statistics APIs, ticketing systems and social media platforms are the starting point. We develop solutions that integrate seamlessly via open standards such as REST-API.

We deliver results that are visible. Our work for Bayer 04 Leverkusen was recognized at the German Digital Award 2024. Well-made digital solutions stand out - and pay off in terms of brand and reach.

We provide end-to-end support. From requirements analysis, development and migration to ongoing operation, everything comes from a single source. No subcontracting, no gaps in responsibility at go-live.

Conclusion: digitalization in sports as a competitive advantage

Fans use their smartphones to decide which club they want to follow. Sponsors invest in reach that can be measured. And sports organizations that do not use their data make worse decisions than their competitors.

Digitalization in sports is therefore not an IT project, but a strategic investment in fan loyalty, revenue and competitiveness. The technological foundations are in place. What is needed is a partner who understands sports organizations and develops solutions that really work in match operations.
